About 20,000 seniors in northwest Ohio will receive $50 worth of coupons to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey from local farmers.
The Area Office on Aging of Northwestern Ohio, Inc., is taking applications for the 2019 Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program until the coupons run out. To get an application, please click here.
Fresh produce is key to preventing and managing a wide range of chronic conditions, said Rebecca Liebes, PHD, RDN, Vice President of the Area Office on Aging’s Nutrition, Health and Wellness Division.
“Eating fruits and vegetables is very therapeutic,” Rebecca said. “For example, you can really reduce high blood pressure by eating fruits and vegetables and eliminating animal products.”
Coupons are available to eligible residents aged 60 and older. A two-person household can earn no more than $31,283 a year to qualify for the program.
More than 100 farmers, roadside stands, markets and other business in the 10-county region accept the coupons, which expire October 31. Seniors receive 10 coupons worth $5 each.
The Area Office on Aging first started the program as a pilot in 2001.
